Virginia Man Won't Let His Mental Illness Define Him (HealthDay)

THURSDAY, Dec. 29 (HealthDay News) -- Loren Booda experienced his first psychotic break when he was 19 years old.

Then a sophomore studying physics at an Ivy League university, Booda had struggled with feelings of anxiety and depression for years. He said he'd self-medicated by drinking and smoking marijuana. But then he tried LSD, and all of the demons that had been gnawing at his soul for years burst forth and took over his life.

"The LSD basically brought out all of the symptoms of mental illness that I'd grown accustomed to," said Booda, now 52 and living in Arlington, Va.

He eventually was diagnosed with schizo-affective disorder, an illness that combines psychotic symptoms with mood disturbances.

During that first psychotic break, Booda said, he heard voices that weren't there and became increasingly paranoid. He also experienced his first brush with the stigma associated with mental illness when the school asked him to leave after doctors first diagnosed him as a paranoid schizophrenic, a diagnosis that others refined later in his life.

"Once I was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia, people like that supposedly do not study at an Ivy League school or live on campus or participate in the university," Booda said.

He ended up living a life apart. His parents had enough money that he didn't have to work, Booda said, so he spent most of his time working volunteer jobs. He got a bachelor's degree in physics from George Washington University, but he's never worked in that field.

"A lot of times I think a volunteer job can be ideal, in that people are able to overlook disabilities," he said.

He volunteered for an energy company, for the Boy Scouts and for Goodwill Industries. "Finally, for 17 years, I worked at a park and worked my way up to the point where I could operate the park and nature area," Booda said.

Booda said he tried to get paying jobs, but his diagnosis often got in the way. He remembers one boss, who ended up becoming a good friend, treating him as though he wasn't suitable for the job.

"I worked for him two to six weeks," Booda said. "I was paid at the end of that period, and he said to me, 'Loren, you work better when you're not paid.' What kind of comment is that? It was hurtful."

Booda now works as a call-taker at the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), where he started as a volunteer in 1995 and began being paid for his work in 2003. He receives treatment for his illness, which includes taking four different medications, he has a girlfriend and steady work and tends to look on the bright side when it comes to his condition.

"My illness has given me an opportunity to work in places I might not otherwise have," he said. "I've been with my girlfriend for about nine years. I have two new cats, and they're knocking everything over hither and yon."

"And my work with NAMI -- I relish it," Booda said. "It's like a sustenance. I am making a difference."

Georgia?s most-used iPhone and iPad apps of 2011

Georgia's most-used iPhone and iPad apps of 2011

So to get it out of the way, while I?m running iOS 5 on my iPad I?m still running iOS 4 on my iPhone. I need my jailbreak, the iOS 5 untethered jailbreak just went live yesterday, and I haven?t had time to update yet. That?s why many of my apps, and a couple of my most-used apps of 2011, other than Mail, Safari, etc. are mainly jailbreak apps. Oh, and games!

LockInfo

The original Notification Center, it?s still way more useful and not only lets me keep track of everything but lets me quickly preview messages so I can stay on top of things during my typically hectic days.

Infinidock

Apple?s stock 4 apps in the dock simply aren?t enough for me. I want more and Infinidock provides for just that. Thanks to Infinidock, I can only keep Mail, Safari and Phone at the ready, but App Store and iTunes Store, and many, more more as well. (Yes, I download a lot of apps and music, but I can use the excuse that it?s my job!). Just add all you want and scroll away!

Twitter for iPhone

I don?t use Twitter that much, so even though Twitter for iPhone went through a major change recently, it?s still my go to Twitter app. It lets me see my replies and write my tweets and that?s pretty much all I need. (Though I do find Tweetbot adorable!)

Chuzzle

I love strategy games and while I still played Plants vs. Zombies and Field Runners last year, Chuzzle has been my main addiction of late. It?s cute, it?s easy to get into and out of if you only have a short amount of time, and it?s by Popcap so how can you go wrong?

Netflix

Netflix update brings new UI for iPad

I have a digital antenna and Windows Media Center PVR for most of my day-to-day television viewing, but for pretty much everything else I use Netflix on the Apple TV. It has great old shows like Damages and the original X-Men cartoon. If you have young kids, Netflix is hours of entertainment, especially if you put it on their iPod touches!

US Army's A160 Hummingbird drone-copter to don 1.8 gigapixel camera

Starting in July of 2012, the United States Army will deploy three Boeing A160 Hummingbird drones to Afghanistan as part of a one-year trial program. Unlike the Predator drones already in combat, the A160 is a rotor-based aircraft capable of vertical take-offs and landings. What's more, the craft will be affixed with the DARPA-developed ARGUS-IS imaging system -- which boasts a 1.8 gigapixel camera the Army says can "track people and vehicles from altitudes above 20,000 feet." The A160 Hummingbird platform will provide the Army with the ability and flexibility to: take off and land without a runway; fly for twelve hours or more without refueling; and monitor up to 65 enemies of the State simultaneously. Test flights of the unmanned chopper are scheduled for early 2012 in Arizona, but residents hoping to get a glimpse of the A160 in action best have great eyesight -- the ARGUS-IS system can see targets from almost 25-miles down range. Oh, and don't forget to smile when you look up. You want to look your best for the eye in the sky, right?

Congressman: Iraq releases 3 security contractors

(AP) ? Three security contractors including two Americans were released by Iraqi army forces Tuesday after they were held for more than two weeks, the chairman of the House Committee on Homeland Security announced as he demanded a full report on the episode.

Republican Rep. Peter King of New York identified the men as Army veteran Alex Antiohos of West Babylon, New York, National Guardsman Jonas March of Savannah, Georgia, and Kevin Fisher of Fiji.

King said they were working for a security firm when Iraqi Ministry of Defense officials rejected paperwork prepared on their behalf by the Iraqi Ministry of Interior and began holding them on Dec. 9.

The men weren't charged with any crimes and King said it appeared that they were not injured.

He said Antiohos, who lives on Long Island, spoke to his wife Tuesday evening, and he was expected to be home later this week.

"She said he seems to be doing well," he said.

King said they were released after efforts by his office, the State Department, the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad, the Defense Department and the White House.

He said he will demand answers from the Iraqis as well from U.S. authorities about how the incident was handled after they learned about the men.

"We're going to have thousands of contractors over there, including many Americans. Can the Iraqis just take them off the street and hold them? This is a terrible precedent. We have to get to the bottom of this," he said.

The New York congressman said he was concerned that U.S. military authorities had not been notified by the U.S. Embassy that the men were being held and that embassy representatives had not visited the men when he learned about it from Antiohos' wife last week.

"We have to find out if there could have been better coordination between all the agencies to make sure something like this doesn't happen again," King said.

U.S. troops completed a full withdrawal from Iraq this month after nearly nine years of war.

"This should be a bit of a wake-up call as to whether the situation really is deteriorating in Iraq," he added. "Iraq was supposed to be an ally. We liberated Iraq. Yet they hold these men for 18 days. ... It's inexcusable that they were treated this way by a supposed ally."

South Korea peace seekers meet new leader of the North (The Christian Science Monitor)

Seoul, South Korea ? The widow of a former South Korean president invoked memories of the brightest moment in North-South relations Monday as she visited the bier in Pyongyang of the late North Korean leader Kim Jong-Il.

Mr. Kim's successor, Kim Jong-un, stood quietly by as 90-year-old Lee Hee-ho wrote that she hoped ?the spirit of the June 15 South-North Joint Declaration? ? signed by her late husband Kim Dae-jung and Kim Jong-il in June 2000 ? ?would be carried forward to achieved national reunification as soon as possible.?

Ms. Lee's visit was a poignant reminder of the hopes from that earlier summit and South Korea's failed Sunshine policy of reconciliation with the North. That effort stalled as North Korea forged ahead with nuclear and missile programs. South Korea's current president, Lee Myung-bak, ended the Sunshine policy but allowed Lee to undertake today's trip.

RELATED: 4 questions about 'dear successor' Kim Jong-un

The decision to permit her and another widow deeply involved in North Korea to lead condolence delegations to Pyongyang represents more of a special exception rather than a significant olive branch. The government denied permission for all other South Koreans, notably politicians critical of its hard-line policy.

But Lee and Hyun Jeong-un, widow of Hyundai chairman Chung Mong-hun whose company opened up special zones for business and tourism in North Korea, had personal and historical ties that could not be ignored. Lee's husband, who died in 2009, won the Nobel Peace Prize six months after the North-South summit. Mr. Chung committed suicide in 2003 after his indictment for passing enormous bribes to persuade Kim Jong-il to agree to the summit.

For Lee, the journey by road to Pyongyang marked her first visit to North Korea since she flew there with her husband for the summit. Her yearning for a return to her husband?s Sunshine policy is shared by many of her husband?s allies and followers, but she avoided bitterness before entering North Korea at the truce village of Panmunjom 40 miles north of here.

In a statement read by an aide, Lee said simply, "I hope that our trip to North Korea will help improve relations between South and North Korea.?

KCNA said the two widows inscribed their thoughts in a mourners? book. Kim Jong-un thanked them ? the first words that he?s been known to have uttered to visitors from South Korea.  Kim Jong-un was ?standing vigil beside the bier with other members of the funeral committee,? according to KCNA, when wreaths were laid in their name ?amid the playing of solemn music.?

Kim Jong-un was busy not only with preparations for the funeral on Wednesday but also with assuming the power held by his father for 17 years.

North Korea?s party newspaper Rodong Sinmun on Monday called on North Korea?s armed forces ?to protect Kim Jong eun as respected leader of the party?s central committee.? That?s the latest  sign of the build-up of Mr. Kim ?as great successor? to his father, reported one week ago to have died of a massive heart attack on Dec. 17.

Kim Jong-un ?  already hailed as ?supreme commander? ? is expected to rule behind a junta led by an uncle, Jang Song-thaek, husband of Kim Jong-il?s sister. An official photograph has shown the portly young Kim, his stomach protruding beneath a plain dark blue uniform, beside an uncle wearing a dress uniform displaying the stars of a high-ranking general as they bowed before his father?s coffin.

?Kim Jong-un will be focused on consolidating his power and the other key leaders in the country will be focused on not letting things fall apart,? says Bruce Bechtol, author of numerous studies of North Korean security issues, most recently Defiant Failed State. With ?regime priority? North Korea?s ?most important priority,? Bechtol estimates the new leader ?stands only a 50-50 chance of being able to consolidate his power and rule the DPRK? ? that is, the Democratic People?s Republic of Korea ? though he believes ?no one else has enough of a power base to take over.?

In a bid to to show the strength and continuity of the regime, North Korea is making a huge issue of condolences. The North's Committee for the Peaceful Reunification of Korea came out with a harsh attack Sunday on South Korean authorities for denying permission for other South Koreans to go to Pyongyang bearing condolences.

The committee warned that such ?obstructions will entail unpredictable catastrophic consequences? and ?test the morality of the South Korean authorities ? and the ?sincerity of their call for improvement of the North-South relations."

None of the visitors to Pyongyang will attend the funeral itself.  Both Lee Hee-ho and Hyun Jeong-eun are returning to South Korea on Tuesday, one day before the funeral.

Gaza's Hamas leader launches Muslim world trip (AP)

GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip ? Gaza's prime minister left the territory Sunday on his first trip abroad since his militant Hamas movement seized power in June 2007, hoping to improve ties with Muslim countries swept up in the uprisings convulsing the Arab world.

Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh's deputy, Mohammed Awwad, said the Gaza leader would visit Egypt, Sudan, Qatar, Bahrain, Tunisia and Turkey.

Awwad said Haniyeh would discuss possible development projects for Gaza and the West Bank, as well as progress toward reconciling the dueling governments of the two Palestinian territories and Israeli construction in disputed Jerusalem.

"We hope that with this visit we can turn a new page in Palestinian-Arab relations," he said before Haniyeh left for neighboring Egypt through Gaza's Rafah crossing.

His departure was confirmed by border official Maher Abu Sabha.

Awwad said the Gaza prime minister would meet with uprising leaders as well as official decision-makers.

Haniyeh plans to be abroad at least two weeks and possibly more if he receives invitations to visit from other Muslim countries, Awwad said.

Haniyeh had been confined to Gaza, mostly because of tensions with Egypt and fighting with Israel. But Egypt's new rulers have warmed up to Hamas since longtime President Hosni Mubarak was toppled in February.
