Business telephones: Smoothen your corporate communications

In this age of technological superiority, where every business is striving hard to not only survive, but emerge as a successful leader in the highly stiff competitive environment, you must need an excellent communicative tool. One such tool is pbx telephone systems. To simply explain what the pbx phone system is, we would define it as having a personal phone network installed inside your office premises. The PBX telephonic system works with the simple fundamental principle that it sends the external calls and internal calls via lines named as ?trunks?.

To simply put the things a PBX System eradicates busy signals, guarantees that each and every call must be answered when it rings, automatically connects the customers to the suitable person within the organization, offers voicemail services to each and every employees within the company, and most importantly, enables each and every employees of the firm to communicate over the phone line for gratis. In addition, a PBX telephonic system assigns each and every employee or a group of employees a particular extension number.

With PBX telephony, you can easily determine the number trunks that you will need in the near or distant future. Let?s clear the concept of trunks. A PBX system adopts trunks, which are voice lines that further enable the company to make external calls. Although, you would not require a separate and dedicated trunk for each and every employee of yours, rather the calling pattern adopted by the organization and the requirement of extensions decide the amount of trunks required.

Generally a customer may adopt a PBX telephonic tool keeping in mind the following features such as call waiting, conferencing, call holding, intercoms, transferring, call pick-up groups, voice mails and the capacity to control the restrictions on the dialing of external numbers. Some of the advanced PBX telephonic systems are built on the most cutting-edge technology that incorporates extra feature such as Interactive Voice Response (IVR), music on hold, caller ID and Cal Detail Records (CDR). For the sole purpose of enhancing the efficiency of a business, you can lay your hands on the PBX telephones data cabling systems which are fabricated with the aid of the most advanced technology that also has Voiceover Internet Protocol (VoIP) and other internet data capabilities.

Irrespective of the size of the business, every single of them need a proper PBX System, and is often referred to as the best key system, which is highly cost-effective. Moreover, prior to the installation of the PBX system, you must crosscheck with the Supplier as to whether they give after-sales services or not? And what type of technical assistance are they willing to render, initial setup fees, employee training, etc. Therefore, experience the power of highly advanced telephonic systems now by installing one at your office space.

Structure & One Thing Self Improvement

If there?s anything I?ve been jealous about people who live more traditional lives it?s their sense of structure. Actually, I don?t think jealous is the right word because I wouldn?t trade places.

But I think this is why entrepreneurs, freelancers, and artists are obsessed with goal setting and list making. It provides the sense of structure that we wouldn?t otherwise have. With nobody telling us what to do we have to tell ourselves.

For about 12 years now I haven?t had a real sense of structure. I?d go sleep whenever, wake up whenever (usually 7-9 hours after falling asleep), write down a list of things to do (either morning of or night before) and go at it (or sometimes ignore it completely). This list would usually include simple tasks like shopping or cleaning. Often, the idea of making a big list would be so overwhelming I wouldn?t bother.

I?ve been experimenting with less lists. Smaller lists. Different structure.

For example, I already know I have to buy food or I can?t eat so listing ?go to the store? is somewhat redundant. I still do what I?ve done for about 7 years as far as shopping lists though: when I think of something I need to buy I put it on a list. Recently, I ?outsourced? this. I buy a few things quite regularly from a small health food store (?winki Trzy!) and asked them if I could place a standing order and pick it up once per week. This eliminates writing down what I need and takes care of that aspect of shopping.?Note: I could probably also get it delivered somehow and completely eliminate this task, but being that I work from home I appreciate the 20 minute roundtrip walk to pick up groceries.

And if something needs cleaning I clean it. It doesn?t need to go on any lists if it just gets done. I?ve eliminated chores from these lists.

Cluttered lists don?t do us any favors.

Long lists lull us into a false sense of accomplishment when we check off chores and small everyday tasks. I?ve also realized that trying to force myself into a structure that doesn?t work for me (e.g. going to sleep early, waking up early) stresses me out. I?ve always enjoyed the dead quiet of night for my work time and when I try to, for example, get important work done during the day at home where it?s often loud (neighbors, construction, phone) or in a coffee shop (?fucking espresso machine!?) I get anxious and unfocused.

Instead of trying to force traditional structure I?ve been changing focus.

One Thing Productivity

I?ve been focusing on one goal per day ? or what I?ve been calling my One Thing. Some days this might be as simple as ?write 2 pages for a book.? Some days it might be ?figure out?xCode?compiling errors.? And sometimes it?s something like, ?learn to play 2 new bars of Doc Watson?s?Deep River Blues.? Sometimes my One Thing only takes an hour or so, sometimes it takes a few hours (xCode compiling errors!) and sometimes it can take most of the day.

It?s not to say I won?t do anything beyond my One Thing. But One Thing is most important.

My criteria for my One Thing is that it must make a step towards improving myself or my business acumen. (Sometimes these are one and the same.) If I?m working on a big project I can break down the smaller pieces into One Thing each (like the fingerstyle blues, for example).

This One Thing productivity method is essentially a hybrid of Leo Babauta?s ?No Goals? (complete lack of structure doesn?t work for me) and traditional goal setting (gets far too muddled and overwhelming to be effective).

At the end of the day if I accomplish my One Thing I can think to myself: ?Karol, you?ve improved today. You rock.? The nice?thing?is the barometer is your own. You don?t have to look at what other people are working on and compare yourself to that. It?s easy to get into that loop and lose sense of self and reality.

Jimmy Valvano?once said?to have a ?heck of a day? you have to laugh, think, and cry. I like that list, but would add just one thing (!) to it: improve.

Harmony Gold says violent clashes at S.Africa mine

GENEVA (Reuters) - Kris Kristofferson -- Oxford scholar, athlete, U.S. Army helicopter pilot, country music composer, one-time roustabout, film actor, singer, lover of women, three times a husband and father of eight -- seems ready to meet his maker. At least, that was the clear impression he left with an audience of middle-aged-and-upwards fans at a concert in Geneva this week, a message underscored by his 28th and latest album, "Feeling Mortal" and its coffin-dark cover. ...

American Horror Story, Season 2

Every week in?Slate?s?American Horror Story TV club, J. Bryan Lowder will have an IM conversation with a different?AHS fan. This week, he rehashes episode 2.6 with AHS superfan George Abbott.

J. Bryan Lowder: Happy Thanksgiving Eve Mr. Abbott, and welcome to the TV Club! After hearing all that talk of flesh tonight--touching it, missing it, cutting it--I wonder if you still have an appetite for your bird tomorrow...I have to say that was one doosy of an episode!

George Abbott: Honestly, I can eat anything if Thredson doesn't talk about wearing Clea DuVall's teeth again. I've been rabidly watching this show since the beginning, but last week was the only episode that actually gave me nightmares. And speaking of the upcoming holiday, how perfect was it that they sent us into decorative gourd season with maybe the show's best line ever: "Nutmeg makes all the difference?in the world." I'm going to find DOZENS of ways to use that in the next 5 days.

Lowder: Yes! I found this episode particularly scary--and well-crafted--myself (I believe Murphy was the writer), and also, despite the scariness, particularly campy? That nutmeg line you mention was divine, as was the new level of queen Quinto brought to our now unbuttoned Thredson. That, paired with his newly revealed infantilistic obsessions, just blew my mind. But I wonder, do you worry that two sites of horror--Thredson's basement and Briarcliff--will lessen the affect of both? I'm a little ambivalent about the world expanding outward too much.

Abbott: That's so funny, because I was thinking about how refreshing it was that this episode dealt with relatively few characters (even though, now that you mention it, they spent very little time at Briarcliff). My bigger concern is with the Bloodyface unhappy-childhood direction in general. I mean, next to some of the stuff Ryan Murphy's thrown at us (possession, rape, Nazis, etc.), I have to wonder if an orphanage and apparent lack of colostrum (which, yes, I had to look up after that scene) is enough to send someone down the serial killer track. Did it ring true for you?

Lowder: That's a great question (and you will have to tell me and our readers what colostrum is: The TV Club is all about sharing the knowledge)! I guess we have to expect some kind of gripping back-story for our serial killers, but I'm a little bummed they didn't just leave the "explanation" for his violent tendencies unclear. I find that inexplicable violence is more frightening than overly explained stuff. Though i do think that his self-theory was based on some real research--perhaps a commenter can tell us whether it still holds true?

Abbott: Oh - it's so gross. Colostrum = First Milk

Lowder: OMG, really? That's super gross. And I think we can assume that she wouldn't even be lactating, right? Unless she's secretly pregnant?

Abbott: Yeah, I'm pretty sure that was a... ahem... dry run. And I totally agree with you - once you've gotten into skin-lampshade territory, no background story is going to live up to the scariness of "skinning 33 year-olds alive is just his thing." But I have to get your take on one of the biggest questions of this episode: How... on earth... is this the first time that AHS has given us a super-creepy child WITHOUT some kind of mental illness/Down's? I can't believe that they held off on going into a "The Omen" space for so long!

Lowder: I hadn't even thought about that! Yes, the new affectless child was a welcome edition, and I'm glad you brought her up, because I thought her scene with Sister Mary Eunice was maybe my favorite of the episode. Their dry repartee was intoxicating. I'm kind of hoping Eunice will take her under her possessed wing and be an evil mentor--she will need a sidekick in the NEW ERA! Speaking of which, do you have any theories about her plans? She's clearly QBIC now that's she's got the dirt on Arden.

Abbott: I don't know about her plans, but if she wants to start her own church, I'm THERE. I actually wrote down "You were born with the gift of authentic impulse - don't ever let them kill it" like it was some Oprah-wisdom I needed to write on my mirror in lipstick every morning. MOVED. But I'm a little disappointed with her small moves so far. I mean, she's the devil, and all she's done so far is some gossip, some covering up, and some lingerie theft - I'm guessing she's trying to lead Arden to bring about some kind of zombie apocalypse, but I'd really rather she start a skanky Lesley Gore tribute band with Jude and take it on the road.

Lowder: I'm speechless. Your appraisal of Sister Mary is, like, Platonic. Are we soul mates? I don't have any concrete ideas, but I do tend to follow your logic (i.e. toward the drug-resistant zombie apocalypse). More machinations from her soon, please! Speaking of which, if I had to look like Shelly (bye bye Chloe Sevingy!) to survive the Russians' nuclear attack, I think I'll pass.

Ok, it's time to get back to cooking, so let's wrap it up with a final question--we were treated to another glimpse of the present day this evening, iPhones in severed limbs and all. What?s going on? Is Threadson still alive? Does he have acolytes? The voice on the phone sure sounded like him....

Abbott: Here's what I'm thinking: It's Threadson (it sounded A LOT like him on the phone), his plotline has dovetailed with Arden and he's some kind of age-resistant momma's boy zombie, and seriously NO ONE IN THE WORLD will care if he puts Megan Fox Lite out of her misery (how is that girl not dead yet???)

Lowder: Ha, totally. The colostrum mixed with the "immune boosting cocktail" and made him live forever, just so he could take out Channing Tatum's wife. Leaving him available?for me. Get into it. Alrighty, I'm going to get into some turkey stock real quick. Hope your holiday is as yummy as Thredson?s sandwich!

Suffolk County SPCA Offers Advice For Keeping Pets Safe At ...

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) ? With all that food on the table, it may be tempting to give your pets some scraps this Thanksgiving. But animal experts warn that what you hand out to your dog or cat could be harmful.

The Suffolk County SPCA has advice for pet owners on keeping their furry friends safe during the holiday season:

  • Avoid giving pets turkey bones. They can cause obstructions, choking and intestinal damage.
  • Keep chocolate away from pets. It?s a toxic substance to animals, particularly dogs. Dark chocolate especially is toxic and can be fatal.
  • Nuts can cause vomiting and diarrhea in animals.
  • Avocado can cause buildup of fluid in internal organs and cause damage to the heart.
  • Close the oven door. A cat could jump in seeking a warm place.
  • Secure the trash.

4D scans show fetuses yawn in the womb

LONDON | Wed Nov 21, 2012 6:44pm EST

LONDON (Reuters) - Growing into a fully formed human being is a long process, and scientists have found that unborn babies not only hiccup, swallow and stretch in the womb, they yawn too.

Researchers who studied 4D scans of 15 healthy fetuses also said they think yawning is a developmental process which could potentially give doctors a new way to check on a baby's health.

While some scientists have previously suggested that fetuses yawn, others disagree and say it is nothing more than a developing baby opening and stretching its mouth.

But writing in the journal PLOS ONE on Wednesday, British researchers said their study was able to clearly distinguish yawning from "non-yawn mouth opening" based on how long the mouth was open.

The researchers did this by using 4D video footage to examine all the times when fetuses opened their mouths.

Nadja Reissland of Durham University's department of Psychology, who led the study, said the function and importance of yawning in fetuses is still unknown, but the findings suggest it may be linked to fetal development and could provide a further indication of the health of the unborn baby.

"Unlike us, fetuses do not yawn contagiously, nor do they yawn because they are sleepy," she said. "Instead, the frequency of yawning in the womb may be linked to the maturing of the brain early in gestation."

The study was carried out on eight female and seven male fetuses from 24 to 36 weeks gestation. The researchers found that yawning declined from 28 weeks and that there was no significant difference in how often boys and girls yawned.

Get Better Dental Care With These Great Tips - Health and Fitness ...

It can be very hard for people who are afraid of dentists to get the dental care they need. Taking good care of your teeth should be easy once you have the right information. By following the advice presented here, you will soon be headed in the right direction.

If you cannot afford dental work, see if your dentist will let you pay in installments. Often dentists offer a direct payment plan or offer the option of using a financing company. This is a good way to break the cost down into affordable chunks.

To maintain healthy teeth, get plenty of calcium. Many foods such as cheese, yogurt and milk are loaded with calcium. If you dislike eating high-calcium foods, you should think about taking a daily calcium supplement pill.

The heads on your electric toothbrush must be change every two months. The bristles can get worn out from use and the result is decreased performance in effective brushing. Your brush should also be switched out regularly because of bacteria concerns.

You should try to select healthy snacks whenever possible to cut down on the amount of damage to your teeth. When you don?t, brush your teeth soon to rid your mouth of excess sugar. By doing so, you are making yourself less susceptible to developing cavities.

Go see your dentist regularly to have your teeth cleaned and inspected. If you don?t see the dentist regularly, you could have serious problems down the road. By going to see your dentist routinely, you will be able to have any problems fixed before they get too bad.

Clean your toothbrush regularly. Thoroughly rinse your toothbrush when you are finished. Employ a vertically standing toothbrush holder to keep the head of the toothbrush from coming in contact with other things. Do not keep toothbrushes inside containers to avoid bacteria. Change out your toothbrush regularly.

Do not always believe what your dentist says. For instance, if he tells you that you are in need of a deep cleaning, seek out another opinion to make sure. Deep cleanings are very expensive, so it is important to ensure that you really need it. Your dentist could be suggesting that you need it simply because he wants your money.

If you have not done so yet, you should work hard now to make it a priority to properly care for your teeth. Develop a comprehensive and efficient dental care regimen you can apply on a daily basis. Apply everything you?ve learned from this article.

Explanation:
Its not really as hard as it looks, I swear. What you see is a list of every character that is known now. What you o do is give a synopsis of how your character feels about them. After their name copy/pasta the symbol corresponding with your the relationship. Afterwards, give a quote in italics. Something that your character would say to them. Or something they'd say about them in an interview. Afterwards, give a brief summary of something your character would say when asked how they feel about the corresponding character.

There's a lot of characters and a Character Relationship Chart makes it easy for everyone to keep up with where their characters stand with everyone else's.

  • Aedan McKellan: ? | ? Aedan? Oh, he's fine. A party animal, definitely. I don't know him extremely well, but we're not strangers, either. I think if we talked a bit more, we could get really close.
  • Amarina Yani King: ? | ? Haha, seems like my kind of girl! We've never even spoken, well maybe once or twice but not on a regular basis, so this might seem weird, but yeah. She seems loud, not afraid to express her opinion. Not that I've been stalking her or anything, haha. I just wish she'd be a bit less quiet around me, it's not like I haven't heard her care-free reputation. Did that even make sense? Oh, whatever.
  • Atreyu: ? Well, first things first, I love his name. Just puting it out there. I love weird names, and his normal name is unpronounceable, so he goes by his nickname, which is equally as weird. About his personality.. I don't hate him, don't love him. Too much of a Merlin character for me. I mean, he's nice, but that's the problem, I guess. All charming and mighty and the girl's are all swooning over his six pack and stuff.
  • Azalia Dorin: ? | ? | ? Yeah, I put down three, what of it? It sort of depends, so yeah. She's a bit.. crazy? Not like insane crazy, just temperamental. Which is why Clarity hangs out with her, I guess. All I'm saying is that, even though I can't say I'm amazing at every subject, she's not trying at school at all, and I'm worried it will rub off on Clarity. Like, I'm not going to let Clarity stay at my apartment when she can't get a job. Just saying.
  • Brooklyn Jones: ? She's a puck, so I have to be friends with her, right? Nah, I'm just messing about that, but I would consider her a friend. She's a bit younger than me so we don't hang out all the time, but our conversations aren't boring.
  • Clarity-Castro Moore: ?| ? Ugh, Clarity. She's such a bossy bitch, but she's my sister. I am a bit protective over her, I guess. I mean, only Matthew and I are allowed to be mean to her, fact.
  • Delilah Rose Nox: ? Who is she? Just messing. Delilah and I are best friends, she's just so, what's the word, carefree? Yeah, that's it. Love her to pieces, like a sister. Well, not like a sister, because I love her more than Clarity, but you get what I mean. Can I put down ten thousand smiles?
  • Divinia Doriano: ? | ? Don't recognize the name.. oh, wait, I do, I think. Isn't she that bitch in Circe? She's a bit too.. self-centered to me. Don't know if that's the right word, but I won't say anymore because I don't know her enough to say anything.
  • Ever Daniels: ? Ever and I seem to get along fine, she's really chatty, like me. Seems to be a risk-taker, too, though maybe that's just because she never thinks before she acts.
  • Hazel Lealis: ? | ? She's fine, sweet. To be honest, she kind of intimidates me. I know I may seem like a whole high and mighty guy "- yeah, not really Jason," but - wait, hey! Shut up invisible voice! Anyway, as I was saying, I know I may seem all tough, but yeah. Maybe it's just because she's so hot. Don't tell her I said that, she might get cocky. Heh, cocky.. "Stop being a dirty-minded prat, Jason." What part of shut up don't you understand?
  • Iain McLean: ? Well, he's a teacher, so I have to hate him, right? It's how it works! Anyway, don't know him. He's a professor, that's it. Oh, and he's supposedly like a bazillion years old or something.
  • Jason Castro-Moore: ? | ? I'm bloody amazing! Hell to the yeah! If I didn't like myself, then wouldn't I just change my attitude? Like what kind of a question is that!
  • Joseph Fino: ? | ? Seems nice but.. he doesn't take much risks, does he? I mean, I'm not one to 'live on the wild side of life' but I don't think he's broken the law! Ever! And since he's seventeen, this also means he's still a virgin! Like, relax mate!
  • Karol Angelo: ? Karol? That's his name? Hah, isn't that a girls name? And why does he spell it with a K? It's a unisex name, Jason. What the fuck is a unisex name? Anyway, same as above, I automatically hate all professors. It's my golden rule. That, and the five second food touch the floor rule, or whatever it's called.
  • Kwan Yin Xong: ? Kwan Kwan! Oh, by the way, don't tell her I said that, she might kill me or something. Anyway.. yeah, I know I said I have to hate all professors, but I put her as neutral for that amazing name. Jason approves!
  • Lina Dorin: ? | ? Oh yeah, she's Azalia's sister, yeah? Sorry but, how are they related? They are literally polar opposites! Well, not literally, but don't go telling me how to use words!
  • Melody Eleanor Nox: ? She's Delilah's.. half sister, I think it is. I don't really know for sure, never asked. Don't know her too well, since they don't get along very well, but yeah.
  • Rose Gilome: ? | ? Gilome is a fancy surname, so good job! Yeah, I think I've spoken to her on occasion. A nice girl, but not a push over.

I'm aware I did this mildly wrong, but I was half way through before I understood what it meant.. xD I'll do it right for Clarity though! Promise! By the way, love the thread!

Cyrille Diabate, Ivan Menjivar big winners on UFC 154 preliminary card

The preliminary card of UFC 154 had a little bit of everything. Cyrille Diabate picked up a win with a fight that packed three-rounds worth of action into a half-round. Diabate leveled Chad Griggs early with a punch, but Griggs turned the fight around with a takedown. But Griggs could only hold on for so long as his nose leaked blood. Diabate took Griggs' back and won with a rear naked choke at 2:24 in the first round.

John Makdessi pulled the upset by jab, jab, jabbing his way to a 30-27, 30-27, 29-28 win over Sam Stout.

Using unrelenting leg kicks, Antonio Carvalho picked up the decision win over Anderson Silva protege Rodrigo Damm.

Ivan Menjivar may have already locked up UFC 154's Submission of the Night bonus with a nasty armbar of Azamat Gashimov. He locked it up at 2:44 of the first.

In other UFC 154 preliminary action:

Darren Elkins def. Steven Siler via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)
Matthew Riddle def. John Maguire via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 29-28)

Jordanians call for king's ouster during rally

AMMAN, Jordan (AP) ? Thousands of Jordanians have taken to the streets across the country to call for the ouster of their U.S.-backed monarch in the fourth day of unrest sparked by fuel price hikes that have threatened the stability of this Arab kingdom.

The protests came after similar rallies turned violent earlier this week, with one person killed and 75 others, including 58 policemen, injured in the unrest.

Crowds on Friday varied from about 150 people in the southern town of Tafila to 3,000 in the northern city of Irbid. The rallies were led by the largely secular Hirak youth movement.

The rare calls against Jordan's Abdullah II are seen as an expression of frustration over the sharp increase in fuel and gas prices. Jordan is plagued by poverty, unemployment and high inflation.

5 health problems linked to energy drinks - Mother Nature Network

Concerns over the potentially harmful effects of energy drinks, especially when they?re combined with alcohol, have been growing in recent years.

?

A story in the New York Times on Nov. 15 added to that concern, noting that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has received reports of 13 deaths linked to 5-Hour Energy, an energy drink. The drinks contain about 215 milligrams of caffeine, the equivalent of about two cups of coffee.

?

Here, a rundown of five worrisome health issues that have been linked to downing stimulating drinks:

?

Heart problems

In recent years, the company that markets 5-Hour Energy has filed about 30 reports with the FDA of serious injuries associated with its products, including heart attacks, according to the New York Times story.

?

And in 2007, a 28-year-old Australian man suffered cardiac arrest after consuming eight cans of an energy drink, containing 80 mg of caffeine each, over seven hours. The patient did not have a history of chest pain.

?

Caffeine and other compounds in energy drinks can boost heart rate and blood pressure, said Dr. John Higgins, associate professor of medicine at the University of Texas Medical School in Houston.

?

Caffeine can cause heart cells to release calcium, which may affect heartbeat, leading to arrhythmia, Higgins said. The drinks may also disrupt the normal balance of salts in the body, ?which has been linked to arrhythmia as well.

?

However, there is not enough evidence to say unequivocally that energy drinks cause heart problems. More research is needed to determine the amount of energy drinks people need to consume in order to experience these negative effects, Higgins said.

?

The risk of miscarriage

The FDA has also received one report linking a miscarriage to consumption of 5-Hour Energy.

?

Studies examining the effects of caffeine on miscarriage have been mixed. A 2006 study of more than 1,000 pregnant women found that those who consumed more than 200 mg of caffeine per day (from coffee, tea, soda or hot chocolate) were about twice as likely to have a miscarriage compared with pregnant women who did not drink caffeine. However, a study published in 2008 found no link between caffeine consumption (regardless of the amount) ?and the risk of miscarriage at 20 weeks of pregnancy.

?

Because study findings have not been conclusive, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists advises that pregnant women limit caffeine consumption to 200 mg per day.

?

An increased risk of alcohol injury and dependence

Studies suggest that combining alcohol and energy drinks can be dangerous.

?

Although caffeine is a stimulant, research suggests it does not "counteract" the sedating effects of alcohol. There is concern that mixing alcohol and energy drinks may keep people awake for a longer period of time, allowing them to consume more alcohol than they ordinarily would, according to an editorial published last year in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

?

A 2011 study of about 1,100 college students found those who downed energy drinks frequently were about 2.5 times more likely to meet the diagnostic criteria for alcohol dependence than those who did not consume energy drinks. The link may be due to the practice of mixing alcohol and energy drinks, or drinking caffeine to recover from a hangover, according to the JAMA editorial. It could also be that caffeine's effects on the brain play a role in addiction, the editorial says.

?

Risk of drug abuse

Another study of 1,060 students found that energy drink consumption in the second year of college was associated with an increased risk of prescription drug abuse (use of stimulants or prescription painkillers without a prescription) in the third year of college.

?

One explanation for the link "is that energy drinks, like prescription drugs ? might be regarded by some students as safer, more normative, or more socially acceptable than using illicit 'street' drugs," the researchers wrote in a 2010 issue of the Journal of Addiction Medicine.

?

Impaired cognition

Although some students rely on energy drinks to pull all-nighters to study for exams, there?s some evidence that the excessive levels of caffeine in the drinks impair cognition. A small 2010 study found that drinking moderate amounts of caffeine, about 40 mg, improved performance on a test of reaction time, but drinking higher amounts ? equivalent to the levels found in a (250 ml) can of Red Bull, or 80 mg ? worsened performance on the reaction test.

GOP Governors Scramble to Comply With Obamacare

As states near a critical decision regarding Obamacare by Friday, many GOP governors once opposed to the healthcare law are gradually accepting House Speaker John Boehner?s declaration that Obamacare is now ?the law of the land.?

?The election is over and President Obama won,? one of Obamacare?s strongest opponents, Florida Gov. Rick Scott, said earlier this week in dropping his opposition to the law.

?I?m responsible for the families of Florida,? Scott said, whose state has nearly 4 million uninsured people. ?If I can get to ?yes,? I want to get to ?yes.? ?

Obamacare, which was upheld in June by the U.S. Supreme Court, requires states to decide by Friday whether they will establish health insurance exchanges.

These Internet marketplaces give individuals the opportunity to compare and purchase private health insurance or, if eligible, enroll in public Medicaid coverage.

Small businesses may use the exchanges to offer their employees a choice of coverage at group rates under the Small Business Health Options Program.

States interested in operating their own exchanges without federal involvement must notify the Department of Health and Human Services by Friday, but they get until Dec. 14 to provide the details.

Federal tax credits tied to income will help many shoppers pay for coverage on the exchange. And competition among insurers and a large number of customers are expected to keep premiums low. Enrollment on the exchanges begins next October, with coverage taking effect in January 2014.

Obamacare requires all Americans to have health insurance in 2014 or pay a fine.

More than 9 million people are expected to get coverage through the exchanges in 2014, and 25 million in 2017, according to estimates by Avalere Health, a Washington healthcare consulting firm.

A number of Republican states , Florida among them, put off establishing the exchanges, hoping that Republican Mitt Romney would win the White House on Election Day.

But President Barack Obama was re-elected ? and that dashed the hopes of many GOP governors and other state officials on seeing Obamacare repealed.

?It's a very practical decision for states now," said Alan Weil, executive director of the nonpartisan National Academy for State Health Policy in Washington. "We are going to have a significant number of states running their own exchanges, a significant number where the federal government is running the exchange, and a significant number of partnerships.

?The bottom line is we are going to have to figure out how to make all three models work," Weil said.

In Mississippi, GOP Insurance Commissioner Mike Chaney notified Washington on Wednesday that his agency will proceed with a state-run exchange. The move, however, disappointed GOP Gov. Phil Bryant, who still strongly opposes Obamacare.

"If you default to the federal government, you forever give the keys to the state's health insurance market to the federal government,? Chaney said.

And as for trying to battle the federal government, Chaney added: ?We tried that 150 years ago in the South, and it doesn't work.?

In New Mexico, Republican Gov. Susana Martinez?s administration had been working to put the law into place. With a fifth of its population uninsured, the state plans to operate its own exchange.

?The party is over. The opposition is over," New Mexico Human Services Secretary Sidonie Squier said. "Whatever states didn't think they were going to do it, I think they're going to have to do it whether they like it or not. It's a done deal now."

Ohio, like Florida, is leaning toward a partnership with the federal government.

In Iowa, GOP Gov. Terry Branstad is postponing a decision pending more information from Washington.

But his spokesman, Tim Albrecht, said Iowa is exploring a partnership exchange that could include several states. Albrecht said they believe they can get to a state option if needed.

Branstad also said he was leaning against expanding Medicaid.

?We don?t want to get trapped in something we can?t afford and can?t be sustained,? he said.

In Virginia, Gov. Robert McDonnell also echoed Branstad?s concerns, saying he was hesitant to expand Medicaid unless the states are given more power to run the program.

?There are too many unanswered questions to make the decisions,? McDonnell said at a meeting of the Republican Governors Association on Thursday in Las Vegas.

But many other governors are still balking, citing excessive costs and regulation.

?It?s a bad piece of legislation,? Louisiana GOP Gov. Bobby Jindal said at the governors? meeting. ?It?s going to have a lot of unintended consequences.?

The governors sent a letter to the Obama administration, asking for more time.

Other GOP states also are holding fast.

In Texas, the election results did not change any of the opposition to expanding Medicaid or to setting up insurance exchanges. Likewise for South Carolina, Missouri, Kansas, and several others.

?Adding more people to an already sinking ship with money that is either being borrowed from China or coming out of taxpayers' pockets is bad policy and bad for Texans," said Catherine Frazier, spokeswoman for Texas Gov. Rick Perry.

Twenty-seven percent of Texas residents are uninsured, the largest percentage for any state.

Maine Gov. Paul LePage is not setting up a state exchange where residents who don?t receive health insurance through their employers can shop for subsidized plans.

?I?m not lifting a finger,? he said. ?We?re not going to get involved. We?re going to let Mr. Obama do a federal exchange. It?s his bill.?

Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal said, ?I don?t see how we can afford it.?

At the Las Vegas meeting, governors that included Jan Brewer of Arizona and Mary Fallin of Oklahoma said they were still weighing their options on Medicaid expansion.

Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker said he?ll announce his plans by the Friday deadline.

?It?s the law and we?ll comply with the law,? Walker said at the meeting. ?The question is which way do we go about doing that.?

The Associated Press, Bloomberg News, and McClatchy Newspapers contributed to this report.

Africa and Latin America Still Fight Vulture Funds ? MercoPress

Timerman has targeted Paul Singer, and insists Argentina will not reward ?loan sharks?

Timerman stated that Argentina is not willing to pay the ?vulture funds? and also requested the help of ?good spirited nations? in order to continue to argue the issue and clamp down on the existence of ?vulture funds?.

?Our message is clear: we will pay the overwhelming majority of debt holders, who have agreed to a debt swap that has contributed to Argentina's recovery that also pays a fair share of interest on those investments?.

?A world free of these scavengers will not only benefit Argentina, but also poorer countries in Africa and Latin America,? Timerman urged.

The article also published in Buenos Aires Pagina 12 follows:

Last week I was in Pretoria for a scheduled meeting on political and financial issues. I spent hours conversing with my colleague Maite Nkoana-Mashabane about the amazing transformation that her country is experiencing. As a teenager she had to walk 15 miles daily to fetch a bucket of fresh water. Those were the times when for the vast majority of South Africans drinking water at home was a luxury.

Mrs. Nkona-Mashabane was an activist during the apartheid and is overly familiar with the meaning of political struggle. During our conversation we shared our views on vulture funds, an issue affecting both Africa and Latin America. These investment ventures, marketed as ?distressed debt funds,? purchase debt of countries on the brink of default for a fraction of the bonds' worth hoping to recoup the full value through legal challenges in foreign courts. Such strategies are frequently rewarded by bailout actions targeted at alleviating poverty and instability -- such as debt restructuring in African nations -- or debt restructuring in which most bond-holders, such as pensioners and small investors receive important ?haircuts,? as happened in Greece earlier this year.

While vulture fund practices originated in South America, the method has increasingly been used to target Sub-Saharan countries. In the '90s vulture funds took flight and have, since then, landed on the Democratic Republic of Congo, Congo Brazzaville, Liberia, Zambia, Cameroon, and Ethiopia secretly acquiring debt at bargain prices. They then waited for debt relief policies from the World Bank, IMF and wealthy nation states to launch their attack presenting their titles before American and European courts and suing for the full value of the debt.

When it was clear that a lion's share of aid to Africa was falling into vulture funds' claws, some organizations managed to question the international financial system, illustrating the corruption, inconsistencies, and injustice it entails. Jubilee Debt Campaign in the UK and Jubilee USA Network are coordinating efforts to pressure their respective governments and the international financial institutions into taking action.

Knowing the audacious schemes that vulture funds have been using to take African money, my counterpart was eager to know more details about a new chapter of this saga, currently taking place in Ghana, where a judge has impounded Argentina's Libertad navy training frigate in the port of Tema, following the request of the vulture fund NML Capital. A piece of Argentina's national patrimony has been detained, in clear violation of international law, in yet another attempt to cash out on speculative debt purchased for pennies, in the wake of a default a decade ago.

The global economy allows debts to be traded like commodities. Vulture funds abuse the system, acquiring distressed debt in secondary markets to multiply profits at the expense of the poor and weak. As these activities are ethically repellent, well-prepared propaganda machinery keeps their lucrative business alive. For obvious reasons, vulture funds try to avoid the political debate about their practices. Until now legal technicalities and credit enforcement principles have prevailed over the alleviation of human suffering and global inequality, but since the financial bubble burst there is a growing opinion that unregulated speculation is not only unfair but also bad for business in general. Vulture funds' tactics are clearly disruptive to debt swap processes and prevent countries from recovery.

Benefiting from tax and jurisdiction loopholes, vulture funds create obscure societies or task forces to lobby for their interests in tribunals, legislative bodies and newspapers. It is necessary to expose the millionaires behind the vulture funds and make them responsible for every vulture fund action. The Argentine naval vessel that has been seized in Ghana by NML, a subsidiary of Elliott Associates, belongs to Paul Singer.

Paul Singer could be branded as the inventor of vulture funds; in 1996 he won a case against the Peruvian government for a 400% profit. After this success, Singer sued the Republic of Congo for$400 million dollars for a debt it acquired for 10 million and ended up with 127 million. Needless to say, this is money that should be going to build roads, schools and other poverty reduction programs. Worst, these nations are often on the receiving end of debt alleviation and international funding -- which then goes to line the pockets of said vulture funds.

In this game political connections play an important role. Though Paul Singer has been the biggest donor to the Republican campaigns for many years, he leaves nothing to chance: when the polls reflected a political sea change during George W. Bush's presidency, he appointed Democrats to lead a task force created to lobby against Argentina.

The American Task Force Argentina (ATFA) has the mission to disqualify, intimidate and discredit my country's government, which has declared that it will not yield to vulture funds. To convey their message they conveniently forget to inform that the lobby is financed by a vulture fund. In the past, ATFA lobbyists walked the halls of Congress pretending to represent teachers that had invested in Argentine bonds. When the lie became unsustainable, they turned face: they now claim to lobby on behalf of American taxpayers. The crude truth is that NML is based in the Cayman Islands just to avoid paying taxes in the US.

After the 2001 default, in the midst of a crisis that threatened the very continuity of the Argentine nation, in 2005 and 2010 Argentina designed and carried out a complete swap of its debt which was accepted by more than 92% of Argentina's creditors.

Our message is clear: we will pay the overwhelming majority of debt holders, who have agreed to a debt swap that has contributed to Argentina's recovery, which also pays a fair share of interest on those investments. It is worth emphasizing that interests of restructured bonds were tied to the Argentine GDP performance, which after an average growth of 8% per year since 2003, resulted in a significant gain for bondholders who joined the swap.

However, we will not reward loan sharks who bought defaulted bonds for next to nothing and have refused a deal that would have represented a clear profit, asking much more, even several times the amount they spent.

If Argentina beats Paul Singer and others, the consequence may well be a world where vulture funds' actions against developing countries are history. A place free of these scavengers would benefit not only my country, but also other poor nations in Africa and Latin America. We encourage all good-spirited nations and organizations to help us get rid of them.

(AP) ? Former Seahawks tight end Jerramy Stevens was arrested on suspicion of assaulting U.S. women's soccer team goalkeeper Hope Solo a day before their planned wedding day, according to police and court records.

A Kirkland Municipal Court judge released Stevens after a court appearance Tuesday, saying there was no evidence connecting Stevens to any assault, according to news reports. He was arrested early Monday for fourth-degree domestic violence assault but has not been charged.

The judge determined there was not enough to hold Stevens, but the case is still under investigation, Kirkland Police Lt. Mike Murray said Tuesday. Charges could be brought later if prosecutors and police find other evidence, he said.

Solo appeared in the courtroom Tuesday afternoon, but left without saying anything to reporters, according to KING-TV.

A call to a number listed for Stevens in court documents rang unanswered. A message left at a listed number for Solo was not immediately returned.

Stevens, 33, and Solo, 31, applied for a marriage license Thursday, according to King County records.

The two, who have been in a relationship for two months, were set to get married Tuesday and argued over whether to live in Washington or Florida after their marriage, according to court documents.

Police in the Seattle suburb of Kirkland responded to a disturbance at a home around 3:45 a.m. Monday involving a physical altercation between eight people during a party, said Lt. Murray.

He said officers contacted several people in the home who appeared intoxicated and didn't cooperate with police, but determined based on information and observations that there was probable cause to arrest Stevens for investigation of fourth-degree assault. Murray didn't identify the alleged victim, but court records show it was Solo, who received a cut to her elbow.

Court documents show that Solo's 34-year-old brother, Marcus, called 911, and that he and Solo told officers there was a party and blamed the disturbance on two to three unknown men who were at the party. Marcus Solo told police he used a stun gun on one of the men, who left the party before police arrived, according to court records.

According to court documents, a police officer found Stevens, "who appeared to be hiding," lying between the bed and the wall in an upstairs bedroom. Stevens told officers he was sleeping on the floor and didn't hear the fight. The officer saw signs of a fight, and dried blood on Stevens' shirt.

The officer noted in his affidavit for probable cause for arrest that he arrested Stevens based on his admission that he argued with Hope Solo, the injury to her elbow, signs of a fight in the bedroom where Stevens was found and blood on Stevens' shirt.

One 32-year-old woman was taken to the hospital for treatment of a hip injury, and another man suffered multiple bumps, scrapes and contusions, Murray said.

"If officers find that an assault may have taken place, then we have to make an arrest on who we determine is the primary aggressor," Murray said.

Stevens was selected with the No. 28 pick of the 2002 draft by the Seahawks after a stellar career on the field at Washington. But he also was involved in incidents away from football that included reckless driving charges for crashing into a nursing home.

He was mostly a first-round bust with the Seahawks, except for the 2005 season when he started a career-high 12 games and had 45 receptions as the Seahawks won the NFC championship.

His run-ins with the law weren't done when he left college. Stevens was arrested on reckless driving charges in 2003 in a Seattle suburb and in 2007 when he was charged with driving under the influence in Scottsdale, Ariz.

Stevens' most recent arrest came in 2010, while he was playing for Tampa Bay, when he was arrested the night before a game for possession of marijuana. He was almost immediately released by the team.
