Group lets injured troops train own canines as service dogs

WARSAW ? In a hotel room in Colorado, Chuck and Kate Daffron made a decision to change the lives of disabled veterans.

Out of that conversation, the Edwards couple decided to launch their non-profit organization Daffron Doghouse to help veterans train their own service?dogs.

Chuck trained his own dog, Zeus, to help him with severe anxiety and to alert him when seizures or blackouts are about to occur.

While on a trip to Florida, Kate was watching Zeus when a homeless Vietnam veteran approached her. He commented on how beautiful he was and said,??These dogs know what we?ve gone through because these were the ones that were over there with us.?

She watched the man tear up before he walked away. This was the moment she realized: ?We?ve done it for ourselves; we could help other people and we?could train for other people.?

Chuck's service

Chuck looks like a normal man on the outside, but on the inside it?s a different story. He joined the Army in 1990 and served in Desert Storm and in?Somalia in 1993.

He transferred into the National Guard in 1994 and served as a military policeman until a shunt was placed in his brain to drain a cyst which prevented?him from wearing his Kevlar protective headgear. He was medically discharged from the guard. The shunt was later removed and he resumed his guard?duties. In 2006, he was allowed to re-enlist in the Army, where he served until April 2012.

He suffered multiple injuries that led to surgeries on his knees, brain, hands and elbow. He has nerve damage in his back and neck, memory loss,?blackouts and seizures. At 41 years old, on bad days he can?t walk halfway across a parking lot without having to stop.

His post traumatic stress was triggered in a major way in April 2010, when he went to Fort Polk, La., to train some troops who were getting ready to?deploy. He was supposed to be an evaluator. He was uncomfortable because they used live amputees on the field to simulate the realism of war.

?When the big guns and the explosions started, he snapped. That?s the first time he had a wide awake flashback,? said wife Kate. ?He?s had nightmares?for years. He said this was different. He jumped in with the team and started shouting orders. He thought he was back in Mogadishu and needed to get?his men out of there.?

Following this experience, he started having full-blown anxiety attacks when he was in public. Though he had processed the sights, the blood and the?smells of battle, he never processed the sounds.

?I have total respect for these older veterans who dealt with a lot of this all their lives and never had any help. Even in Desert Storm, you didn?t?talk about it,? said Kate.

Finding the answers with Zeus

The Daffrons found a way to assist Chuck with his PTSD and extreme anxiety through unconventional means.

?Back in 2009, we got Zeus as a 3-month old puppy with the intentions of trying to train him as a service dog for our now 15-year old daughter. She?s?anaphylactic in about 10 different things,? Kate said.

His second job was going to be working with her special needs day care children. Chuck was Zeus?s primary trainer at the time. When he was about a year?old, they decided to take a vacation to Florida. One day Chuck wasn?t feeling well and sat down on a park bench. He started leaning forward with his?head in his hands. Zeus came up underneath him, pushed him back, put his paws on his lap and leaned up against him. He refused to let Chuck lean?forward. The Daffrons wondered what was wrong with him and why he was acting this way.

Two days later they were at Epcot Center and Chuck rode some rides with his children. When he returned, Zeus jumped on his shoulders, forcing him to?sit down.

?That was our first indication that Zeus was alerting to and detecting Chuck?s blackouts and seizures,? said Kate. ?That?s when we really knew he was?very gifted and that he was not going to be our daughter?s dog anymore.?

Cries for help

Servicemen take note of Chuck and Zeus whenever they walk into a room. While the Daffrons were stationed in Colorado, they were approached by numerous?soldiers who were interested in service dogs. They shared their frustrations on how they couldn?t afford a dog and how the waiting list to receive one?was two to three years. They asked, ?Why can?t I work with my dog that I already have? Can you help us??

The Daffrons thought about this and figured if they could train Zeus by themselves, why couldn?t other soldiers do the same thing? In July 2011, while?in transition during Chuck?s medical board process, they started putting the program together in a hotel room in Colorado.

The premise is to have the veteran train their own dog instead of hiring a company to do the work. The entire program is Internet-based so soldiers and?disabled veterans can participate anywhere in the United States. They can use the program in coordination with a local trainer.

They also help train dogs for people who aren?t physically able because of mobility issues. They don?t take on too many of these cases because they can?help more veterans through the owner training program. Their physical kennel and training space in Missouri is limited.

?Most of the guys that are coming back from the theater right now have PTSD and I can guarantee it affects us, our immediate families and everybody we?come in contact with. Don?t think it does? Let one of us get into a crowded room ? we can?t deal with it, we can?t handle it,? Chuck said.

?That seriously impacts my life. Without Zeus I don?t go in crowds, I don?t go to Walmart, I don?t do anything where there?s going to be a bunch of?people. With him, it kind of soothes me a little bit, but I know that when he?s there, people are not going to come up and just be right up on top of?me.?

Zeus had been trained for seizure alert and response and mobility work up until this point.?After working with the other soldiers, we realized that regardless of their physical injuries, the PTSD was a universal but unseen disability, often?the most debilitating,? Chuck said.

The Daffrons began researching and working with other service dog trainers to also qualify the dogs for PTSD work as psychiatric service dogs.

?We now train all of the dogs for the PTSD work, along with the specific service tasks for their handlers? other injuries,? Chuck said.

One of the commands a dog learns in training is how to non-aggressively guard their handler. When the command ?watch my back? is given, the dog turns?his back to the handler and stares down the people behind him. This allows the veteran to pay his bill in a grocery store or get money out of an ATM?without being taken by surprise.

?For these guys that have extreme anxiety in that line ... they feel trapped. To them it?s like being in that convoy ? what?s going to blow up around?me and how am I going to get out? The dog clears a little bit of safe space,? Kate said.

Servicemembers who qualify

To qualify for this program, service dog handlers must be a wounded warrior or a disabled veteran of any era. They must have documentation of their?disability stating how it seriously impacts their life and a military connection. Active duty soldiers must have a letter of support from their chain?of command. All of the training models are designed for brain-injured soldiers.

By law, the dogs must perform at least three service tasks for the handler. On average, Daffron Doghouse service dogs learn well over 30 service task?commands. The program meets or exceeds all of the accepted standards in the service dog industry such as Assistance Dogs International, International?Association of Assistance Dog Partners, Psychiatric Service Dog Society and Delta Society.

There is never any charge to the veteran for the Daffron Doghouse training program.

?These men and women have already paid a high enough price and this is the least we can do to help them live a more fulfilling life and access their?communities,? said Kate.

Veterans do pay for their own equipment and veterinary expenses. In the future, Daffron Doghouse hopes to provide a team sponsorship program to assist?with a portion of these expenses.

Results so far

Currently there are 37 teams in the program. Twenty-four of them are working with their dogs on some level. Fifteen of those dogs have passed their?canine good citizen test, which means they are allowed to work in public places that are not pet friendly. Seven have passed their public access test.

They have seen positive results over the past year and a half. A soldier who has trouble with anxiety, traumatic brain injury, severe PTSD and memory?loss contacted the Daffrons in January. Soon after he started the program, his wife contacted them. She told him had hadn?t left the house in three?years other than going to the doctor?s office.

Now he is going to the store and taking his children to fast food restaurants, and he is apprenticing with a Daffron Doghouse dog trainer in Colorado,?Hugh McDonald, so he can help other veterans.

?This is why we are unique. We focus on the service dog but we build a team of support with all of the handlers and trainers. Very few of the other?organizations have monthly follow-up forever. They?ll follow up for six months, some of them for a year,? Kate said.

Among their goals are to branch out and provide therapy dogs to chaplains and to VA facilities.

Support is key

The Daffrons are working on building an addition at their home that will include a training room, grooming and kennel area and bedroom for veterans to?stay in while they are working with their dog. They would also like to expand outdoors.

?Our outdoor kennel space is really rough and redneck right now. It was made with used materials. We have three outdoor kennels and a big play yard. I?would eventually like to get some indoor/outdoor kennel spaces and have an enclosed agility and training area,? Kate said.

Items they could use are used fencing, especially commercial or privacy fencing, and used building materials. They are even making some of the agility?equipment out of used pallets.

?We are supporting this organization almost completely out of our own pockets, along with a few donations that we have gotten recently,? Kate said.

The program relies on private donations and volunteers, and individuals or businesses can sponsor a specific service dog team. Daffron Doghouse has?Missouri non-profit status and is working on getting their 501(c)3 as soon as possible.

[Video] 7-Minute Video Introducing the Galaxy Note II Shows All the Amazing Features you Get

It is innovation at its finest here folks. Little tid-bits of features that we have already seen about the Galaxy Note II already have our mouths watering. I will be honest, I did not really think the first Note was for me. I did not need a huge ?phablet? in my pocket, nor did I need all the features I had with it. But Samsung being Samsung, they have definitely up?d the game with the Note II. It just might end up at the top of my Christmas list this year.

Now I can go over all the features covered in the 7 and a half-minute video, but that would be the longest article I have ever written in my life. Word Press would probably explode in my face. That just tells you how many features you get with the Galaxy Note II. I almost think it is TOO many feature, but some would say there are never enough features that can come on a phone. So check out the video for yourself, and prepared to be mesmerized. Let us know what you guys think.

Earn More With These Great Internet Promotion Tips! | Eric Chua ...

Website marketing may be quite difficult if your company is new and you are competing with other companies in the same line of business. A key concept in marketing on the Internet is to have multiple promotional and marking ideas working so you can choose which ones work best. Keep reading below to find out about a wide variety of tips and techniques you can implement. You won?t need to implement them all, but you will be able to select a few that may work well for you.

Allow your customers the ability to purchase items at wholesale prices if they buy in quantity. Even the wholesale prices will leave you with some profit, but you will be selling much larger quantities than before.

A 500 error page that is user-friendly is an important tool to have. This occurs when the website?s code is malfunctioning and not working properly. A boring page that gives this message may annoy your potential customer. There are ways that are better to let the users know you are informed and attempting to repair the issue.

TIP! To make your internet business a success, take the time to evaluate the competition. Look at websites of other businesses in your chosen field, and see what can be improved.

Good content is the very source of a successful Affiliate marketing strategy. Constantly analyze your content to make sure it is of the highest quality and exactly what visitors are looking for. Make sure to have someone else critique your content. A fresh outlook can provide useful insight and catch errors that would have otherwise gone unnoticed. Lastly, run a program that checks your content for spelling and grammar errors, to make sure that it is absolutely perfect.

Affiliate marketing is not just exclusively on the internet. You can use the Internet to invite interested parties to conferences where you can meet them in person. This will have them become more familiar with your brand; this will make them more excited about writing about your products.

Offering a return policy is often very important when it comes to Web marketing. This will result in your customers feeling more secure and give you and your business credibility. By establishing that you will be fully responsible, customers are far more likely to put some trust in you and click that ?buy? button.

TIP! Submit your free materials and products to Internet directories that list such products for free. IF you are giving away an e-zine, give it to a lot of different directories.

To improve the level of satisfaction your customers feel with your site, add a section for frequently asked questions. This will help to answer your visitor?s questions immediately, which can solve their problem and improve satisfaction. When product benefits are spelled out in detail, it is more likely that people will buy.

Finding the right niche to market your Internet based business or website is key. You cannot sell a product or service if you have no heart in it. Niche marketing is one of the most important aspects of Internet market; it?s essentially the path that all other marketing techniques will travel down. Set your marketing with this in mind.

Think about just how good your product really is. You can have the best internet marketing around, though if what you are selling is below average, you will not see any changes to your bottom line. In order to see your sales grow, you should be sure that you are marketing a quality product, one that is superior to your competitors products.

TIP! Have special promotions to attract more visitors to your website. You can offer a dollar sale on one of your ebooks, for example.

Do not give up on things that were not initially successful. You never know when something might click and work, so keep your efforts up. The Internet regularly changes every day, and people are always coming up with new ways to utilize it. Save ideas that might not work today; instead, hold them in reserve for later on.

It is a good idea to cast yourself as an expert when it comes to the items you promote. This will help you establish credibility and loyalty if you can provide vital info and expert opinions and can meet special needs, so be sure to be able to back up your claims.

Use what you have learned to help you focus and devise an effective strategy. As said previously, spending time on setting everything up makes a huge difference. Make use of the advice you have read here to see an increase in traffic, and more importantly, in sales

TIP! Keep in mind that your website?s look and functionality are just as vital to your business as a more traditional in-store shopping experience. Regularly test your ads, links, graphics, and checkout system for problems that may inconvenience site visitors.

Lady Mary?s hair stuns on Downtown Abbey ? Carson approved wedding headband and tiara

Lady Mary?s wedding dress, tiara and veil did not disappoint on Downton Abbey season 3.

Across the pond, Downtown Abbey season three premiered with a wedding. (It comes to us in the states in January 2013.) If you read the episode recap on Daily Mail you?ll find all sorts of delightful details about how Lady Mary Crawley (Michelle Dockery) married Matthew Crawley (Dan Stevens).

This 1920?s wedding was very romantic. Lady Mary?s wedding dress was a modest column dress with a high-deck and sheer sleeves. The exclamation mark for the outfit was the jeweled garland headband (or tiara) worn with her cathedral length veil. Simply sumptuous. Of course, a picture says a thousand words?

Among the many insights and the extensive information gained by those attending the 14th Annual Shared Ownership Investment Conference?(SOCIC) last week in Orlando, Florida, was information about the changing demographic of today?s timeshare owner. A very helpful overview of current buyers and owners was revealed in the Shared Resort Real Estate Ownership 2012: A Market Perspective.

This report covers a survey conducted by MMGY Global, involving 810 active leisure travelers who are considered to be a nationally representative sampling, and who met specific criteria regarding age and annual household income. The survey was conducted during this past June and July (2012). Among those surveyed, the average minimum annual household income was $ 50,000; they were between the ages of 25 and 64, and had traveled at least once for leisure purposes this past year, staying overnight, and going 75 miles or more from their home.

Peter C. Yesawich, Ph.D., vice chairman of MMGY Global said this of the report, ?The implications suggest that the preferred product offerings and services will continue to evolve with the shifting social values of today?s leisure travelers. The results also reveal that the concept of shared ownership aligns well with marketplace trends, which bodes well for continued industry growth.?

Here?s a profile of leisure travelers interested in buying timeshare, vacation ownership, or fractional ownership real estate:

  • Average age is 42.
  • 63 percent are married.
  • 40 percent have children who reside in the household full time.
  • He or she vacations, on average, 3.4 times per year (based on the past 12 months).
  • Typically sends $ 1,730 on lodging accommodations for leisure travel.
  • 80 percent of those surveyed who where current timeshare owners, preferred a beach or lake destination for vacationing.
  • 84 percent of those surveyed who where perspective timeshare buyers, prefer a beach or lake destination for vacationing.

TasteTV's 6th Annual Los Angeles Chocolate Salon took place Saturday at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium.

It was a dream come true for any chocolate lover, with unlimited tastings of endless varieties such as organic, raw, 90% cacao dark, and even ube flavored chocolate.

Other unique flavors included durian, Thai chili ginger, and morello cherry ch?vre chocolates. There were also chocolates infused with fruits like mango and lime, whereas others featured spices and seasonings such as cardamom, Hawaiian black salt, and gray sea salt for dipping your chocolate.

In addition to chocolate, vendors offered tastings of savory treats such as beef jerky (including gluten-free jerky), and beverages such as Honest Tea and Swiss Water.

Other variations of sweets were available to sample as well, such as?hibiscus and green tea caramels,?mocha hazelnut toffee, and bacon caramel popcorn.

There was also sour plum popcorn, hibiscus popcorn, and the most surprisingly outstanding flavor combination of the day, seaweed caramel popcorn.?You read that right, folks. Seaweed and caramel, enveloping the popcorn and making it taste oh-so-good! The savory umami flavor of the seaweed brought out richer, deeper notes in the caramel, and the popcorn itself added the texture and chewy crunch to round out the experience.

The chocolates themselves came in many forms -- some were filled with two layers of infused ganache, while others enrobed various foods such as peppermint pieces and gingerbread. The rich chocolate also came in drink form and on a stick.

There was even chocolate for do-gooders, where the money raised from the chocolate-hazelnut spread sales went towards rescuing dogs, for those who like their chocolate served with a side of good deeds.

The $20 admission tickets also included access to the Fragrance Salon, where there were many artisanal fragrances to sample and purchase. Demos and talks throughout the 6-hour event featured topics such as chocolate and fragrance pairing, as well as how to temper chocolate properly to make shiny, professional-looking candy bars at home.

It was one of the sweetest tasting and smelling events of all time, as the chocolate talks and demos rounded out a day of festivities in Santa Monica on a sunny Southern California Sunday.

Scoop (2006): Bonding

The clip bonding from Scoop (2006) Tell me about yourself, Peter. This is all so new to me. Well, what would you like to know? Well, I don't know. Anything you'd care to reveal. You know, your hopes, your dreams. Well, I come from a privileged family, as I'm sure you can tell. It was always decided one day I would enter politics. My hobbies are polo and... Oh, I own some racehorses. Hmm. So, how's that for a start? And what are your hopes and dreams? I like to dance and visit museums and, I can cook Chinese food. If you know any good Chinese restaurants... Oh, I've gotten very interested in New Age phenomena recently. Like what? You know, mystical things like astrology and crystals and Tarot. Mmm-hmm. Do you know anything about Tarot cards? Not really. I'm more scientific-minded. I find that if... What are you staring at? Hmm? Oh. You have wonderful enamel. Thank you. You know, I'd love to take you dancing one night. I'm a good dancer. Oh, I would love that. That would be great. Can I confess something? Sure. I just love an American accent, and I find much of what you say very amusing. Oh. I'll take that as a compliment. And since you like Chinese food, I'm gonna have my new secretary send you a list of the great ones in town. Oh, you have a new secretary? Oh, yes. Yes, I'm breaking in someone new. My previous secretary died, a young woman, just very suddenly of a blood clot. It was awful. Did they do an autopsy? How did we get on to this morbid subject? So, you've never seen a real English garden before? Come. I have a couple of treasures.

Two Charts Spell Out Just How Disappointing ... - Business Insider

Apple just reported that it sold more than 5 million iPhones over the iPhone 5's opening weekend.

This is a very disappointing number.

It's below top Apple analyst Gene Munster's estimate of 6 million to 10 million. Worse, it indicates that growth may be slowing at Apple.

Take a look at this chart.

Opening weekend sales grew 70% between the 3GS and the iPhone 4, and then an astounding 135% between the 4 and the 4s. That's acceleration. iPhone 5 sales, meanwhile, grew only 25%. That's massive deceleration.

Nicholas Carlson/Business Insider

Digging deeper into the numbers, we find more bad news. Check out this second chart.

Apple sold the iPhone 5 in 9 countries over its opening weekend. It sold the iPhone 4S in 7. It actually sold fewer iPhones per country this year than the last. That's not just deceleration, that's shrinkage:

iPhone Sales per country

Decelerating growth is not good for a company like Apple, which despite a modest P/E ratio, has one of the most generous trailing 12 month revenue multiples of any hardware company on the public markets.

(AP) ? Germany has launched a war crimes investigation against an 87-year-old Philadelphia man it accuses of serving as an SS guard at the Auschwitz death camp, The Associated Press has learned, following years of failed U.S. Justice Department efforts to have the man stripped of his American citizenship and deported.

Johann "Hans" Breyer, a retired toolmaker, admits he was a guard at Auschwitz during World War II, but told the AP he was stationed outside the facility and had nothing to do with the wholesale slaughter of some 1.5 million Jews and others behind the gates.

The special German office that investigates Nazi war crimes has recommended that prosecutors charge him with accessory to murder and extradite him to Germany for trial on suspicion of involvement in the killing of at least 344,000 Jews at the Auschwitz-Birkenau death camp in occupied Poland.

The AP also has obtained documents that raise doubts about Breyer's testimony about the timing of his departure from Auschwitz.

The case is being pursued on the same legal theory used to prosecute late Ohio autoworker John Demjanjuk, who died in March while appealing his conviction in Germany on charges he served as a guard at the notorious Sobibor death camp, also in occupied Poland.

The conviction was not considered legally binding because Demjanjuk died before his appeals were exhausted. But prosecutors maintain they can still use the same legal argument to pursue Breyer. Under that line of thinking ? even without proof of participation in any specific crime ? a person who served as a death camp guard can be charged with accessory to murder because the camp's sole function was to kill people.

Experts estimate that at least 80 former camp guards or others who would fall into the same category are likely still alive today, almost 70 years after the end of the war.

Authorities in the Bavarian town of Weiden, who have jurisdiction, are currently trying to determine if the evidence is sufficient for prosecution. A German official working on the case confirmed that Breyer was the target of the probe; he spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to release the information.

Breyer acknowledged in an interview in his modest row house in northeastern Philadelphia that he was in the Waffen SS at Auschwitz but that he never served at the part of the camp responsible for the extermination of Jews.

"I didn't kill anybody, I didn't rape anybody ? and I don't even have a traffic ticket here," he told the AP. "I didn't do anything wrong."

He said he was aware of what was going on inside the death camp, but did not witness it himself. "We could only see the outside, the gates," he said.

Breyer said he had recently suffered three "mini-strokes." But he was cogent and clear as he talked about his past for more than an hour, sitting in his living room.

For more than a decade, the Justice Department waged court battles to try to have Breyer deported. They largely revolved around whether Breyer had lied about his Nazi past in applying for immigration or whether he could have citizenship through his American-born mother. That legal saga ended in 2003, with a ruling that allowed him to stay in the United States, mainly on the grounds that he had joined the SS as a minor and could therefore not be held legally responsible for participation in it.

Breyer testified in U.S. court that he served as a perimeter guard at Auschwitz I, which was largely for prisoners used as slave laborers, though it also had a makeshift gas chamber used early in the war; it was also the camp where SS doctor Josef Mengele carried out sadistic experiments on inmates.

But he denied ever serving in Auschwitz II, better known as Auschwitz-Birkenau, the death camp area where the bulk of the people were killed. He also said he deserted in August, 1944 and never returned to the camp, though eventually rejoined his unit fighting outside Berlin in the final weeks of the war.

A U.S. Army intelligence file on Breyer, obtained by the AP, calls that statement into question.

In 1951, American military authorities in Germany carried out a background check on Breyer when he first applied for a visa to the U.S. The file from that investigation lists him as being with a SS Totenkopf, or "Death's Head," battalion in Auschwitz as late as Dec. 29, 1944 ? four months after he said he deserted. The Army Investigative Records Repository file was obtained by the AP from the National Archives through a Freedom of Information Act request.

The document is significant because judges in 2003 said Breyer's testimony on desertion was part of what convinced them that his service with the Waffen SS after turning 18 might not have been voluntary, further mitigating his wartime responsibility.

Also weighing in Breyer's favor with the judges was his testimony that he refused to have the SS tattoo; he does not have such a mark today or evidence that one was removed.

Kurt Schrimm, the head of the specials prosecutors' office in Ludwigsburg, which carried out the Breyer probe before it was turned over to Weiden prosecutors, said he felt there was sufficient evidence to bring charges against Breyer, although he declined to discuss details.

"All of these guards were stationed at times on the ramps (where train transports of prisoners were unloaded), at times at the gas chambers and at times in the towers," he said.

Weiden prosecutors, who were chosen because the office is nearest where Breyer last lived in Germany, say it could take several months before deciding whether to file charges.

A former prosecutor in Schrimm's office, Thomas Walther, said he had known of the file on Breyer from his time there. He is now already representing, pro bono, a woman who lost her two siblings in Auschwitz at the time that Breyer is alleged to have been there. The woman will join any prosecution as a co-plaintiff as allowed under German law. Walther said he has established the email address auschwitz.coplaintiff(at)gmail.com for other victims' families.

"Time is swiftly running out to bring Nazi criminals to justice," Walther said. "I hope that prosecutors in Weiden will act soon on this case."

The Breyer case was handled in the U.S. by the Justice Department's Office of Special Investigations. Eli Rosenbaum, who previously headed the office, would not comment on any details of evidence that had been collected against him, nor say whether American agencies were involved in helping with the German probe. Rosenbaum is now with the Justice Department's Human Rights and Special Prosecutions Section, into which the OSI was merged.

Breyer was born in 1925 in what was then Czechoslovakia to an ethnic German father and an American mother, Katharina, who was born in Philadelphia. Slovakia became a separate state in 1939 under the influence of Nazi Germany. In 1942, the Waffen SS embarked on a drive to recruit ethnic Germans there and Breyer joined at age 17. The fact he was a minor at the time was critical in the 2003 decision to allow him to stay in the United States.

Called up to duty in 1943, Breyer said he was shipped off the same day to Buchenwald ? in Germany ? where he was assigned to the Totenkopf.

By treaty, the U.S. can extradite its citizens to Germany. But Breyer said he would fight any attempts to take him away from the U.S. and his wife and family.

"I'm an American citizen, just as if I had been born here," he said in his Philadelphia home. "They can't deport me."

Libya orders militias to disband, report says

By NBC News staff and wire reports

Libya's army has given militias and armed groups 48 hours to leave military compounds, state property and properties of members of the former regime in Tripoli and surrounding areas, the official LANA news agency said on Sunday.

The announcement came after the Islamist Ansar al-Sharia militia was swept out of its bases in the eastern city of Benghazi on Friday in a surge of anger against the armed groups that still control large parts of Libya more than a year after the overthrow of Moammar Gadhafi.

As parts of the Muslim world fire up with anti-American protests, thousands rally in Benghazi, Libya, where the U.S. ambassador and three others were killed, to support America. NBC's Brian Williams reports.

Omar Turbi, a California-based analyst of Libya, told regional news channel Al Jazeera that the "demonstrations ... were a clear indication that the majority of the Libyan people are not in favor of extremism".

The army ordered "all individuals and armed groups occupying military compounds, public buildings or property belonging to members of the former regime to evacuate these sites within 48 hours", threatening to use force if the groups did not comply, LANA said.

It added that the army had already dislodged a militia from a military complex on the highway leading to Tripoli's international airport on Sunday. It did not name the militia but said the army had arrested its members and seized its weapons.

Protesting Libyans storm militant compound in backlash against armed groups

Friday's invasion of Ansar al-Sharia's compounds, which met little resistance, appeared to be part of a sweep of militia bases by police, troops and activists following a large demonstration against militia units in Benghazi on Friday.

On Saturday, two Islamist militias in the eastern town of Derna, long seen as an Islamist stronghold, announced they were disbanding and evacuating their compounds.

Libya's new rulers have struggled to impose their authority on the myriad of armed groups that have so far refused to lay down their arms, and in fact rely on many of them to provide security.

(AP) ? The NFL and its locked-out officials met the last two days, but a person familiar with the negotiations said Friday the sides remain far apart and no further talks are scheduled.

The person said in an email to The Associated Press that there are "significant and serious economic gaps." The person requested anonymity in characterizing the negotiations because they are intended to remain private.

Michael Arnold, counsel and lead negotiator for NFL Referees Association, acknowledged the discussions, saying his group reached out to the league last week and the NFL agreed to meet. He said there may be additional talks, but it is "not appropriate" to comment on specific issues.

The NFL locked out the regular officials in June and has been using replacements as the season enters its third full weekend. Many players, coaches and fans have been upset with what they say is poor officiating. The NFL has warned teams that it won't tolerate confrontational behavior toward the new officials.

The NFL locked out the regular officials after their contract expired. Negotiations with the NFLRA broke down several times during the summer, including just before the season. This is the first time the league is using replacements since 2001.

The collection of small college officials working the games has drawn tough criticism from those on the field. Monday night's game between Atlanta and Denver underlined the matter, with Broncos coach John Fox and defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio engaging in heated arguments with officials.

In response, the league, according to NFL.com, said Thursday night that senior NFL officials called owners, general managers and coaches from all 32 teams to tell them that respect for the game demands better conduct.

NFL executive vice president Ray Anderson noted "unacceptable behavior" and added "we're not going to tolerate it." He said flags, fines and suspensions are possible for coaches or players who cross the line.

"There's no doubt the integrity of the game has been compromised not having the regular officials out there," Giants linebacker Mathias Kiwanuka has said. "We've got to get that taken care of."

What the fans seem most annoyed with is the lack of pace to games, notably Monday night's win by the Falcons that dragged on past midnight. The NFL has said that it is trying to upgrade the officiating through training tapes, conference calls and meetings.

The league and the NFLRA, which covers more than 120 on-field officials, are at odds over salary, retirement benefits and operational issues. The NFL has said its offer includes annual pay increases that could earn an experienced official more than $200,000 annually by 2018. The union has disputed the value of the proposal, insisting it would ultimately reduce their compensation.

"We just all hope, and I'm speaking on behalf of all 31 other head coaches, we hope they get something done," Rams coach Jeff Fisher has said. "We're trusting that they will."
